Google Sitemaps

A sitemap is a web page that lists the pages on a web site, typically organised in hierarchical fashion.

This helps visitors and search engine bots find pages on the website.

Sitemaps can improve search engine optimisation of a website by making sure that all the pages can be found. This is especially important if a site uses Macromedia Flash or JavaScript menus that do not include HTML links.

Most search engines will only follow a certain number of links from a page, so for large websites, the sitemap helps search engines and visitors to access all content on the website.

Google introduced Google Sitemaps to enable web developers to publish lists of links from across their websites. The sitemap files can then be used to show a web crawler how such web pages can be found.

If Sitemap are submitted directly to a search engine, it will result status information and any processing errors. Refer to Google Webmaster Tools.

Also, the location of the Sitemap can be specified using a robots.txt file to search engines discover the Sitemaps. Add the following line to your robots.txt file:

Sitemap: <sitemap_location>

The <sitemap_location> should be the complete URL to the Sitemap, such as: http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml
