The Times free online archive

200 years worth of The Times appears online and for free

The Times has unveiled its new free online archive which contains almost every issue of the British newspaper for 200 years.

The Times Archive includes more than 20 million articles, photographs and adverts from 1785 and 1985 with only about 100 issues missing. The archive covers events such as Queen Victoria's coronation 1838, the Crimean War 1853-1856 and Captain Robert Falcon Scott's expedition to the Antarctic 1912.

The Times Editor, James Harding said, "The Times Archive is a remarkable resource. It's a treasure trove for anyone interested in history, whether amateur or professional. From the personal and domestic to unforgettable events of the world stage, from the French Revolution to the Falklands War, it is all here in The Times Archive."

Times Online Editor-in-Chief Anne Spackman said, "Many newspapers have digitised their archives, but our ambition at the start of this project was to set a gold standard."
