Submitting Sitemaps to Search Engines

As of April 11th you no longer a need to manually submit your sitemap to search engines. Last autumn, the major search engines agreed upon a standard sitemaps format allowing you to simply add a simple line to your robots.txt file to point the search engines to your sitemap document for your website.

Simply include the following line in your robots.txt file to comply:
sitemap: http://www.yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml

The robots.txt file has up to now been used to deny access to certain areas on your website to search engines by instructing search engine spiders where not to go on your website. This latest sitemaps implementation of robots.txt uses the reverse - instructing them where to go.

Sitemaps are important for good search engine visibility and help you get higher in the search results.
